Regulatory authorities in India and the United Kingdom are addressing the challenges posed by the integration of artificial intelligence into healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.
In India, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) Rajeev Raghuvanshi expressed concerns regarding the adequacy of existing frameworks as AI moves toward making patient-facing medical decisions. Raghuvanshi highlighted ambiguities regarding accountability and whether certain AI solutions meet the current definition of medical devices.
Similarly, the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has proposed 44 recommendations to update regulations. MHRA chief Lawrence Tallon noted that current frameworks are designed for static products and are ill-equipped for AI models that learn and adapt after authorization. Proposed measures include continuous monitoring, the right for patients to know when AI is used, penalties for developers, and a supervised trial system for new models.
