Global hearing loss accessibility initiatives
Overview
Global efforts are addressing the challenges faced by individuals with hearing loss, a demographic the World Health Organization predicts could reach 700 million by 2050.
During the International Week of the Deaf, focus has been placed on human rights and the recognition of sign languages. In Italy, despite the legal recognition of Italian Sign Language (LIS) in 2021, reports indicate that only 17% of schools provided visual signals for students with hearing impairments during the 2023-2024 academic year.
In Spain, the Universitat Politècnica de València is conducting the ‘Vibra’ research project. Funded by the Ramón Areces Foundation, the study investigates multisensory stimulation to make music more inclusive, utilizing tools such as vibrating vests, magnetic loops, and sign language interpretation to engage visual, tactile, and olfactory senses.
