The global travel and hospitality sectors are experiencing a significant shift toward last-minute and spontaneous bookings. Data from the ‘Global Travel Trends & Activities Index 2026’ shows a discrepancy between travel agencies, which plan 31 to 49 days in advance, and direct consumers, who often book with a median of only 11 to 26 days. In the European hotel sector, reports indicate that booking windows are shrinking, with 40% of reservations made within seven days of arrival in 2025. While Southern Europe has been a dominant region for activity bookings, Asia is projected to see growth through the second half of 2026. Further research into accommodation data highlights that in the top ten global destinations, more than half of all bookings occur within a week of arrival. Asia leads this trend, with Thailand seeing 74.8% of accommodations booked within seven days, followed by the Philippines and Australia. Other notable destinations exhibiting high levels of spontaneity include Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands, and Sweden. A study by hotel management software company Sirvoy corroborates these findings, noting that travelers are increasingly embracing spontaneity.
