Life expectancy outpaces healthspan globally
Entities: Catherine Bisignano · Christopher Murray · United States · The Lancet Public Health · Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation
Overview
A July 2026 analysis in The Lancet Public Health re‑examined the Global Burden of Disease data for 204 countries (1990‑2023) and confirmed earlier findings. Global life expectancy climbed from 64.6 to 73.8 years, while healthy life expectancy rose more modestly from 55.9 to 63.1 years, leaving an average morbidity gap of about 10.7 years – up from 8.8 years thirty years earlier. Women continue to experience a larger gap (12.1 years) than men (9.3 years). The study underscored that the widest gaps remain in high‑income nations, now citing the United States (≈14 years), Australia (13.9 years), Canada (13.7 years) and Germany (11.9 years). Around 14.5 % of a lifespan is now spent in compromised health, driven chiefly by musculoskeletal disorders, mental‑health conditions, sensory impairments and metabolic risks such as diabetes. Researchers again urge health systems to shift emphasis toward prevention, early diagnosis and chronic‑disease management to narrow the growing disparity between lifespan and healthspan.
