Global marine conservation and pollution management

Efforts to address marine conservation and pollution have been documented across several regions. In Mayotte, volunteer scientists conducted a research cruise to monitor dolphin populations through photo-identification, supported by an IUCN LIFE 2030 grant. This initiative aims to expand marine mammal databases to better understand population movements and threats.

Concurrently, concerns regarding plastic waste and coastal stability have emerged. The Fondation de la Mer has highlighted the impact of plastic pollution on marine species, advocating for international regulation. In Mauritius, authorities are organizing a national conference to develop strategies for integrated coastal zone management in response to erosion and submersion affecting over 37 kilometers of coastline.

In the Mediterranean, environmental inspections have identified significant microplastic density, particularly in the Alanya region. In Turkey, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has issued substantial fines to facilities found discharging untreated waste into the environment.
