Global maritime alternative-fuel vessel trends
Overview
Global maritime orders for alternative-fuel vessels have seen a significant rebound, with year-to-date orders increasing by 53% compared to the previous year. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) remains the dominant choice for newbuilds, though methanol-powered and LPG-powered vessels are also being ordered.
In the United States, Matson, Inc. is executing a $1 billion fleet renewal program by commissioning three Jones Act-compliant, LNG-ready containerships from Hanwha Philly Shipyard, Inc. The first vessel, the ‘Makua’, was christened in Philadelphia on October 10, 2026. The vessel features dual-fuel engines and is expected to enter service in early 2027 to support Hawaii and China–Long Beach express networks. Two additional sister vessels, the ‘Malama’ and ‘Makena’, are scheduled for delivery through 2028.
