US July jobs report and Hormuz talks drive mixed global markets
Global equity markets were mixed on August 7 as investors awaited the U.S. July non‑farm payrolls report. European benchmarks rose modestly – Germany’s DAX +0.39 %, France’s CAC 40 +0.26 % and Britain’s FTSE 100 +0.16 % – while Asian indices were mixed, with Japan’s Nikkei down 0.1 % and South Korea’s Kospi down 0.6 %.
Oil prices stayed above $83 a barrel after news that Iran had presented a draft proposal to bar U.S. and Israeli vessels from the Strait of Hormuz unless compensation was paid, and that Iran and Oman were close to a temporary reopening deal. Brent crude rose to about $83.2 per barrel and WTI to $78 per barrel.
U.S. market indices fell, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.85 % to 53,885 points, the S&P 500 down 0.18 % to 7,710 points and the Nasdaq Composite down 0.06 % to 26,348 points. Analysts expect the payrolls data to show roughly 83,000 new jobs and an unemployment rate near 4.2 %, which could shape Federal Reserve policy on interest rates.
