Global mobile communication fraud escalation
Overview
Cybersecurity threats involving mobile communication, specifically SIM swapping, have emerged as a significant risk to personal and financial security. In SIM swapping schemes, attackers impersonate account holders to convince wireless carriers to transfer phone numbers to new SIM cards or eSIMs. This allows criminals to intercept security codes sent via text, bypassing two-factor authentication to access sensitive accounts.
These fraudulent activities, which also include smishing and SMS spoofing, have resulted in massive global financial losses. Reports indicate that industry losses surpassed 41.82 billion dollars in 2025, with text message scams alone accounting for more than 400 million dollars in direct damages. Specific regional impacts have been noted, such as in Colombia, where mobile communication fraud has led to claims exceeding 252 million pesos.
