Global natural catastrophe loss trends 2026
Overview
During the first nine months of 2026, global economic losses from natural catastrophes were estimated to be between $204 billion and $242 billion. Insured losses for this period totaled approximately $91 billion to $92 billion, representing the lowest insured losses for the first three quarters of a year since 2015, and the lowest economic losses since 2019.
Severe convective storms were identified as the primary driver of these costs, accounting for approximately 60% to 62% of global insured losses. In the United States, these storms generated over $43 billion in insured losses. The third quarter of 2026 saw insured losses of $29 billion, which was 31% below the 21st-century average. Despite these relatively low figures, reports indicate that inflation, increasing risk exposure, and frequent disasters such as wildfires and floods continue to pressure claims costs.
