Overview

The tenth Copernicus Ocean State Report, produced by Mercator Ocean International, details profound and accelerating transformations in the world’s oceans. Scientists report that the rate of ocean warming has doubled over the last 20 years. Last year, the oceans absorbed approximately 23 zettajoules of heat, an amount roughly 40 times the total energy consumed by humanity during that period.

Sea-level rise has accelerated from an average of 3.8 mm per year (1993–2025) to 4.2 mm per year between 2012 and 2025. Furthermore, ocean acidity has increased by approximately 17 percent since 1985. These shifts are driving extreme marine heatwaves, such as those recorded in the Mediterranean and Black Seas in 2024, where temperatures reached up to 4.6 °C above average for periods exceeding 30 days.

Arctic warming remains a critical concern. Surface temperatures in the region rose by 4.2 °C between 1982 and 2024, averaging about one degree per decade. In the Kara Sea near Russian coasts, temperatures increased by 6.7 °C over 40 years. This has caused a 17 percent reduction in Arctic sea ice surface area over 42 years, averaging a loss of 490,000 square kilometers per decade. This melting, combined with permafrost degradation, leaves roughly 60 percent of Arctic coastal infrastructure vulnerable to erosion and rising seas. The report emphasizes that warming, rising seas, and ecosystem degradation are interconnected signs of long-term, systemic transformation.
