Global onion supply shortages and price increases

Overview

Global onion markets are experiencing significant price volatility and supply shortages driven by adverse weather and agricultural shifts.

In Nigeria, onion prices in Lagos surged by over 200 percent, with bag costs rising from N50,000–N70,000 in May to as much as N250,000. This spike is attributed to scarcity in northern production hubs caused by flooding in states such as Sokoto, Kebbi, and Kano, alongside rising logistical and fuel costs.

Similarly, Argentina and Mexico have reported price increases. In Argentina, prices reached as high as $4,000 per kilo in certain areas, a trend linked to low previous harvest prices that discouraged planting and excessive rainfall in Buenos Aires. In Mexico, supermarket prices reached up to 74 pesos per kilo, driven by reduced sowing in states like Chihuahua and Zacatecas, atypical rainfall, and increased demand during holiday seasons. Logistics and theft during transport have also contributed to higher costs in the Mexican market.
