Global palliative care access and implementation
Overview
Medical experts continue to advocate for the early integration of palliative care to address the physical, mental, and spiritual needs of patients with serious illnesses. While significant gaps in access have historically persisted in Latin America, recent developments show expanding service models and legislative progress.
In Chile, the Universal Palliative Care Law has expanded its scope beyond cancer patients to include individuals with neurodegenerative diseases and advanced organ failure. Regional data indicates a strong shift toward home-based care; in the Maule region, over 85% of care is provided at home, while in the Ñuble region, more than 70% of patients receive home-based services through multidisciplinary teams.
Legislative and educational efforts are also increasing in other nations. Mexico is working to strengthen medical attention and diagnosis for patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and Argentina’s health ministries are conducting training sessions to help medical staff provide integral care and support families through the grieving process.
In Spain, the outpatient palliative care service at the Complexo Hospitalario Universitario de Santiago has seen successful implementation, serving over a hundred patients within three months. This model has helped reduce emergency room visits by facilitating close follow-up and home hospitalization options.
