Global PFAS environmental research and mitigation

Research and mitigation efforts regarding per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as ‘forever chemicals’, are expanding across Europe and the United States.

In Sweden and Finland, studies have identified environmental risks, including findings that water near conventional potato farms contains twice the amount of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) compared to farms without such cultivation. TFA is noted as being potentially reproductive-toxic. However, hydrologists in Sweden reported success in containing PFAS contamination at airports in Sundsvall and Örnsköldsvik, noting that activated carbon in soil can reduce the spread of PFAS from firefighting foams into groundwater by more than 99 percent.

In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has allocated $15 million in grants to study how these substances move through crops, livestock, and ecosystems. Research projects include monitoring PFAS accumulation on farms, studying subsurface tile-drained fields, and using sediment cores to reconstruct deposition histories in the Chesapeake and Maryland Coastal Bays.

Recent developments indicate escalating legal and financial implications. The insurance industry faces potential losses approaching $100 billion, and major chemical companies such as 3M and DuPont have paid over $11.5 billion in settlements. Legal challenges have also emerged regarding labeling; a federal court recently enjoined a New Mexico law that would have required specific labeling for products containing intentionally added PFAS.

Scientific concerns persist, with research from Sun Yat-sen University suggesting TFA may impair blood vessel development by interfering with cellular energy production. Additionally, the U.S. Navy has faced criticism over slow remediation timelines for contaminated groundwater in New York.
