Global breast cancer awareness efforts are intensifying through the ‘Pink October’ campaign. In Europe, initiatives include solidarity events in Belgium and research into risk factors, such as the protective effects of breastfeeding. Data indicates a steady increase in breast cancer incidence in France, which remains among the highest in Europe. In Senegal, the Senegalese League Against Cancer (LISCA) has launched its ‘Acting for Life’ campaign to address high mortality rates caused by late diagnosis. Following a mobilization walk in Dakar, LISCA has begun offering screening consultations and has committed to providing medical and financial assistance for treatments, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy, for those in need. Building on these efforts, LISCA’s 2026 ‘Octobre Rose’ campaign specifically targets both breast and cervical cancer awareness. LISCA President Dr. Fatma Guenoune reported that Senegal records approximately 2,220 new breast cancer cases and over 1,300 deaths annually. To mitigate these figures, the organization is providing coverage for mammographies, biopsies, and other treatments for diagnosed women. The campaign included a large-scale solidarity walk in Dakar with over 3,400 participants. To further improve access to care in the Dakar suburbs, a specialized cancer center is currently under construction at Dalal Jamm Hospital. Concurrently, the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa regional office is intensifying continental efforts by providing new clinical guidelines to healthcare workers to improve the early diagnosis and management of breast cancer. This shift toward structured action aims to address the issue where over 70% of African diagnoses occur at advanced stages. In Tunisia, regional health authorities are deploying mobile clinics and awareness programs across 24 governorates to combat the disease, which remains the leading cancer among women in the country. Additionally, in Mayotte, the Association des Soignants Contre le Cancer (ASCA) is organizing charity galas and community events to promote prevention and support.
