Opera houses in Italy and North America are staging productions of works by Giacomo Puccini. In Italy, the Teatro Sociale in Como scheduled the opera ‘Turandot’ to open its 2026-27 season, with a production focusing on the unfinished nature of the score. Meanwhile, the Teatro Municipale in Piacenza organized a listening guide for ‘La Bohème’ led by musicologist Gian Francesco Amoroso ahead of scheduled performances. In North America, the Opéra de Montréal, in co-production with the Washington National Opera and Dallas Opera, presented a large-scale production of ‘Turandot’. Directed by Francesca Zambello, this version utilized an industrial, dystopian aesthetic to reimagine the character as an authoritarian ruler within a totalitarian state, rather than using a traditional imperial Chinese setting. To mark the centenary of the opera’s 1926 premiere at La Scala, Teatro Coccia in Novara will host two performances of ‘Turandot’ on October 23 and October 25, 2026. This production is a collaborative effort between OperaLombardia—including the theaters of Brescia, Como, Cremona, Pavia, and Bergamo—and the Teatro del Giglio Giacomo Puccini in Lucca. The staging will utilize the unfinished version of the score, mirroring the historical 1926 performance conducted by Arturo Toscanini, which halted at the point of Puccini’s death. The cast features Libby Sokolowski, Roberto Aronica, Songha Lee, Baopeng Wang, and Gerardo Dell’Affetto.
