Global professional and healthcare recruitment challenges

Overview

The accounting and healthcare sectors continue to face structural talent shortages that threaten operational efficiency and growth. In healthcare, shortages driven by an aging population and chronic disease prevalence, alongside high turnover from burnout, risk negatively affecting patient care and increasing costs.

In the accounting sector, recruitment difficulties are compounded by intense competition for professionals who possess both technical expertise and cultural fit. In Australia, capacity constraints remain a major hurdle. Data from CA ANZ and Jobs and Skills Australia indicates that vacancy fill rates for general accountants, taxation accountants, and external auditors continue to fall well below the 67 per cent threshold considered a strong indicator of shortage.

To manage these capacity gaps, firms are increasingly turning to independent specialists and offshore outsourcing. Within the financial services sector, 43 per cent of firms report a preference for independent specialists over traditional consulting firms to address needs in risk, compliance, and AI governance. While major banks have reduced permanent roles in business-as-usual operations, demand for specialized regulatory expertise remains high.

The Australian accounting market is also exhibiting a two-speed growth pattern. Smaller firms under $10 million are growing faster, with an average growth rate of 11.3%, compared to 7.8% for larger peers. This divergence is highlighted by KPMG Australia reporting a 1% revenue decline in FY26. Looking forward, automation and AI are expected to play a significant role in sector revenue, with potential gains estimated in the billions of dollars.
