The London Stock Exchange Group is moving ahead with LSE 24, a separate night-time venue that will run from 17:00 to 07:50 London time with a 30-minute pause each evening. Client testing is scheduled for the end of 2026 and the platform is expected to launch exchange-traded products (ETPs) tracking UK and US equity indices in the first half of 2027, with a possible later addition of UK-listed equities pending regulator sign-off. LSE 24 will incorporate AI-driven “agentic” trading tools and is positioned as a response to growing competition from 24/7 crypto exchanges and to serve Asian-based retail investors seeking continuous access to London-listed assets. In the United States, the SEC has set a public round-table for 17 September 2026 to examine near-continuous equity trading. Nasdaq’s “Global Trading Hours” proposal, which would keep U.S. markets open five days a week for 23 hours a day (4 a.m.–8 p.m. ET, with a one-hour maintenance break) starting 6 December 2026, has received SEC approval. This “24/5” initiative will divide trading into day and night sessions, with a one-hour pause from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM ET for system maintenance. Transactions occurring between 9:00 PM and midnight will be recorded as part of the following trading day. Implementation of this Nasdaq’s plan aims to increase weekly trading availability from approximately 32.5 hours to 115 hours. The new “Night Session,” running from 9 PM to 4 AM ET, will feature limitations such as fewer available order types; specifically, market orders and certain opening or closing orders will not be available. Regular trading hours will remain the primary reference for price discovery. Implementation depends on infrastructure upgrades by the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) and the Securities Information Processor (SIP). Nasdaq is also advancing a token-security framework and a blockchain-based gateway with Kraken, slated for early 2027. Nasdaq President Tal Cohen has noted that implementation timelines remain subject to regulatory approval and alignment with infrastructure providers. The push for extended hours is driven by a transforming investment landscape, including a 97% increase in foreign holdings in U.S. equities since 2019 DTCC and significant interest from the Asia-Pacific region.
