Reports indicate a rise in sophisticated fraud schemes utilizing artificial intelligence to target consumers in different regions. In Wisconsin, the Wausau Police Department reported a 100% increase in fraudulent loan-offer calls over a one-month period. These scams employ AI-generated voices and reference current events to claim recipients have pre-approved loans, aiming to steal personal information through manufactured urgency. In Germany, authorities and automotive associations are warning of a wave of car-buying fraud. Criminals use AI to create convincing fake websites, dealer profiles, and forged legal documents. These schemes often feature bargain prices for accident-damaged vehicles to trick buyers into making advance payments. The Association of Motor Vehicle Trades Baden-Württemberg has noted that these scams are becoming increasingly professional, targeting both private individuals and established dealerships. In response, internet platforms including Mobile.de, Autoscout24, and Kleinanzeigen have partnered with the police and the ADAC to form the ‘Initiative for Secure Car Buying on the Internet’ to improve security measures and consumer education.
