The robotics and artificial intelligence sectors are undergoing rapid transformation, driven by global labor shortages and an inflection point in market growth. While specialized automation is gaining traction, the development of humanoid robots remains a central competitive arena involving players like Tesla, Figure AI, Boston Dynamics, and Apptronik. Recent developments show Physical AI expanding into specialized hardware and foundation models. KDDI and RLWRLD are collaborating on robot foundation models for logistics and retail, utilizing ‘egocentric’ data collection via camera-equipped glasses. In manufacturing, CEC has established a ‘Physical AI Demonstration Lab’ to evaluate the interoperability and safety of industrial robots. To accelerate development, Nvidia introduced Microduck, a $399 robot designed to help developers test how AI transfers behaviors from virtual simulations to the physical world. Humanoid integration is accelerating in industrial sectors. Figure 02 has supported production at BMW plants, Tesla plans to deploy Optimus robots at its Fremont plant, and Hyundai Motor Group intends to deploy Boston Dynamics’ Atlas robots in Georgia by 2028. In South Korea, Rainbow Robotics has piloted the RB-Y1 at Coupang centers, while Lotte Global Logistics is leading a national R&D project through 2031 to develop domestic Physical AI models for autonomous logistics. Newer developments emphasize the breadth of Physical AI. Amulya Vishwanath, founder of Techable VC, suggests Physical AI extends beyond robotics into medicine and materials, noting that the field is currently in a foundational phase. Commercially, TD SYNNEX has partnered with KUKA Group to accelerate the adoption of autonomous mobile robots (AMR) across the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and the Benelux region, aiming to bridge the gap between Operational Technology and Information Technology. Mitsubishi Electric has expanded this industrial frontier is further advancing manufacturing automation by developing a processing system to enable collaboration between that enables humanoid robots and to collaborate with CNC machine tools. Using its proprietary ‘Maisart’ AI technology, the system utilizes an ‘AI Processing Task Planner’ to allow operators to manage tasks like material placement and inspection via natural language instructions. The company aims to achieve practical application and unmanned factories by 2030. Despite momentum, widespread adoption faces hurdles including high costs and the need for robots to interpret unprogrammed situations.
