Global shipping continues to face severe disruptions characterized by rising port congestion and fluctuating freight rates. A structural imbalance has emerged as cargo volumes grew by 28% between 2019 and 2026, outstripping a 21% increase in terminal capacity. Consequently, maritime consultancy Drewry reports that average vessel waiting times have nearly doubled compared to the first seven months of 2019, with containerships spending 31% more time in port. As of late September 2026, logistical pressures have intensified. Port congestion in Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East, and the U.S. East Coast is nearing historic levels, with over 11% of the global fleet currently immobilized due to delays. In the India–Middle East corridor, rising spot costs are being driven by reduced effective September, approximately 4 million TEU of container capacity from vessel turnaround delays. remained idle outside ports, with congestion levels surpassing peaks seen during the pandemic era. New data from Sea-Intelligence indicates that global container shipping schedule reliability dropped to 49.9% in August 2026, the lowest level since September 2022. This decline is largely attributed to congestion at Asian ports, with average vessel delays rising to 6.81 days, the highest level since March 2022. Among major carriers, Maersk maintained a reliability rate of 67.3%, while PIL experienced the largest monthly decline of 10.1 percentage points. Freight rates remain highly divergent. The Drewry World Container Index reached approximately USD 4,500 per 40ft container in mid-September. Additional bottlenecks include tensions in the Bab el-Mandeb strait and drought conditions in the Panama Canal. Looking ahead, BIMCO reports that accelerating fleet growth is expected to weaken the supply/demand balance in 2027.
