In the first half of 2026, women’s sports in the United States experienced a significant surge in popularity and commercial value. Viewership reached 28.6 billion minutes, an 18% increase over the same period in 2025. This growth is supported by a 120% increase in advertising expenditure on women’s sports since 2022, with notable sponsor valuation increases for the NWSL (82%), WNBA (71%), and LPGA (51%). Approximately 52.8% of the US population, or 122.5 million people, are now reported to be interested in women’s sports. This demographic shift is also influencing men’s sports; women reportedly account for 9 million of the estimated 16 million new sports fans, contributing to fan increases in the NFL, MLB, and NBA. Beyond viewership, the rise of women’s professional sports is reshaping media and culture. There is an increasing demand for journalists who can cover the intersection of sports with fashion, entertainment, and social media, with Black women taking on prominent roles as reporters and analysts. Additionally, the WNBA has become a focal point for broader American cultural and social debates regarding gender in sports. Broadly, these trends reflect shifting media consumption patterns. In Australia, live sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup and NRL State of Origin have driven high monthly TV reach, with Total TV reaching 86.7% of the population. Broadcast Video on Demand (BVOD) viewing has grown to account for 19.1% of Total TV minutes, up from 16.2% in late 2025. By September 2026, the growth of women’s professional sports has extended into increased community engagement and international commercial success. In the United States, the Women’s Lacrosse League (WLL) has focused on mentorship through initiatives like free clinics for young girls to provide “visible professional role models.”
