Energy companies are advancing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production through technological upgrades and carbon intensity reductions. In India, Topsoe and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) have entered a technology licensing agreement to support SAF production at the Mumbai Refinery. BPCL intends to revamp its existing kerosene hydrotreater unit to co-process 5% renewable feedstock derived from used cooking oil. The project is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2026 to support domestic blending targets and international CORSIA compliance. In Brazil, Petrobras reported has achieved a reduction in the carbon intensity of SAF produced at the Duque de Caxias Refinery (Reduc). Following an international recertification, recertification under the ISCC CORSIA standard, an audit confirmed that optimizing hydrogen sources—specifically utilizing hydrogen from catalytic naphtha reforming—reduced the carbon intensity of the hydrogen used by 29%. This resulted in a 23.8% reduction in the carbon intensity of SAF produced from corn oil, aiming to meet international regulatory requirements set for 2027. William França, Director of Industrial Processes and Products at Petrobras, stated that the achievement demonstrates that emission reductions depend “not only on certified raw materials but also on continuous process improvements to lower the carbon footprint of production inputs.”
