Global vegetable price fluctuations
Overview
Vegetable price trends have shown significant volatility across different regions due to supply fluctuations.
In India, rising prices for staples such as lemons, ginger, onions, and garlic have strained household budgets. In Kerala, costs for beans and cowpea have exceeded 100 rupees per kg, a surge attributed to adverse weather and flooding in neighboring states that disrupted transport and supply. In Haryana markets like Hathin, lemons have reached 250 rupees per kg and garlic 220 rupees per kg. To mitigate inflationary pressures, the government reduced import duties on edible oils, instructing manufacturers to pass savings to consumers.
Conversely, in West Africa, seasonal bumper harvests previously led to a decline in vegetable prices. In Ghana’s Nabdam District, a surplus of tomatoes, pepper, and okra caused prices to drop significantly, while in Bauchi, Nigeria, tomato and pepper prices decreased following a large wet-season harvest.
However, recent data from Nigeria indicates a sharp reversal in these trends. Between October 5 and October 9, 2026, prices for several staple food commodities rose significantly. Onions saw the most substantial increases, with dry-season onion prices rising 23.8 per cent and wet-season onions jumping 26.7 per cent per 70kg bag. By late October, traders in Enugu reported even higher costs, with large bags of onions reaching between N272,000 and N280,000, up from roughly N170,000 to N185,000 in September. These spikes are attributed to supply shortages from northern Nigeria, poor road conditions, high transportation costs, and insecurity.
