In Portugal, veterinary leaders are advocating for official recognition of veterinarians as healthcare professionals. Paulo Teixeira, president of the Northern Regional Council of the Ordem dos Médicos Veterinários, has emphasized the implementation of the ‘One Health’ concept, noting that animal health services receive less than 0.6% of global health investment. Strengthening institutions is considered vital for managing antimicrobial resistance and emerging diseases.

Robust animal health systems are noted as essential for maintaining international trade standards and preventing livestock epidemics. In Mexico, the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas recently marked the 50th anniversary of its Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics by graduating 173 new professionals trained in animal welfare, biodiversity conservation, and public health.
