The global video game industry is undergoing structural shifts, marked by a rise in PC gaming and a decline in the mobile sector. In Japan, PC gaming market share increased from 5% in 2019 to 12.5% in 2025, a trend driven by previous PlayStation 5 supply shortages and Japanese developers like Capcom and SEGA adopting multi-platform release strategies. Globally, the market shows divergence. Steam has seen revenue growth of 13% over the past year, while the mobile gaming sector faces pressure with a 4% drop in quarterly in-app purchase revenue and a 12% decline in downloads. While the console market experienced a revenue jump due to the Nintendo Switch 2 launch, PlayStation and Xbox revenues declined. Regionally, China remains the leader in mobile gaming revenue, while Singapore and Turkey have emerged as fast-growing publishing hubs. Looking toward the future, the cloud gaming market is projected to reach $38 billion by 2035, a shift that could potentially displace traditional consoles as mass-market products. Analysts suggest dedicated consoles may transition into “niche products for enthusiasts and collectors,” similar to the role of modern record players. This transition is expected to be driven by advancements in artificial intelligence and expanded data center infrastructure. However, immediate economic hurdles remain. High demand for AI data centers and memory shortages have kept GPU prices elevated. Analysts suggest the necessary surplus of GPU capacity required to lower operational costs for cloud gaming providers is not expected until the end of the decade. Microsoft currently holds approximately 40% of the cloud gaming market via Xbox Cloud Gaming, while NVIDIA and Tencent are positioned to benefit through significant infrastructure investments.
