Research published in Geophysical Research Letters confirms that global warming has accelerated significantly. Between 2015 and 2025, the Earth’s average temperature increased by 0.35 °C, a notable rise from the 0.2 °C per decade observed between 1970 and 2015. Co-author Stefan Rahmstorf warned that if these rates persist, the planet could surpass the 1.5 °C Paris Agreement limit before 2030. Climate physicist Antonello Pasini of the National Research Council (CNR) notes that the rate of temperature increase has nearly doubled, reaching approximately 0.4 °C per decade. In September 2026, a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report titled ‘Limiting Overshoot’ warned that the 1.5-degree Celsius warming threshold is now unavoidable. UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that “humanity is speeding past the limit to avoid climate catastrophe.” Recent reports indicate that global temperatures have now surpassed the 1.5°C threshold. New findings from the IPCC and WMO emphasize that human-induced emissions are causing widespread damage to food production, water security, and economic growth. The WMO suggests a 91% probability that at least one year between 2026 and 2030 will exceed the 1.5°C threshold. As temperature targets become harder to meet, global climate finance faces mounting challenges.
