Globalstar satellite connectivity expansion
Overview
Globalstar is expanding its direct-to-device emergency and safety services through a partnership with Skylo. This collaboration aims to provide satellite messaging capabilities to up to 250 million mobile devices, including various Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy models, utilizing Globalstar’s upcoming C-3 satellite constellation.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted Globalstar regulatory authority to operate the C-3 constellation. This low Earth orbit system will consist of 48 operational satellites and six spares at an altitude of approximately 1,414 kilometers. While the infrastructure supports Apple’s satellite communication services—with Apple utilizing 85 percent of the network’s bandwidth—the expansion seeks to broaden connectivity for a wider range of commercial smartphones. Manufacturing for the constellation is being led by MDA Space and Rocket Lab.
