Goa reservation policy legal disputes
Overview
The High Court of Bombay at Goa issued two distinct rulings concerning reservation policies in the state. First, the court declined to stay a new 100-point reservation roster for postgraduate medical admissions at Goa Medical College, rejecting a petition from 41 doctors who argued the framework was arbitrary.
Second, the court issued an interim stay on a notification intended to estimate the Scheduled Tribe (ST) population in Goa. This legal setback drew criticism from political leaders, such as Vijai Sardesai, who argued the stay hindered demands for political reservation for the ST community.
In response to the stay on population estimation, the Goa government announced plans to approach the Supreme Court to protect the process of granting political reservation for the ST community in the Goa Legislative Assembly. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant held a high-level meeting to discuss the impact on re-aligning Assembly seats before the 2027 state elections. A delegation led by Tribal Welfare Minister Ramesh Tawadkar is scheduled to meet with the Solicitor General of India in New Delhi to discuss legal proceedings.
