Goleta firearm retail location controversy

The opening of Goodland Guns in Goleta, California, has triggered significant community opposition due to its proximity to the Here We Grow Early Learning Center. Local parents and advocacy groups, including Moms Demand Action, have organized protests and petitions, citing safety concerns regarding the shared fence and bike path used by children.

While city officials initially approved the firearms dealer license under existing zoning laws that classify the business as a sporting-goods retailer, the controversy has prompted the Goleta City Council to consider new regulations. The council is currently exploring options to amend zoning codes, implement additional business license requirements, or establish buffer zones of 600 to 1,000 feet around sensitive locations like schools and parks. Some officials have also suggested a moratorium on new gun shop approvals.
