Google acquisition of Spirit Airlines data
Overview
Google has reached an agreement to acquire internal business data from the bankrupt Spirit Airlines for $10 million through a bankruptcy auction. The acquisition is intended to provide training material for Google’s artificial intelligence models, such as Gemini.
The dataset includes approximately 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams messages, and millions of files from OneDrive and SharePoint, alongside software code and operational records dating back to 2008. Technical assets reportedly include 30 million lines of source code, software models, algorithms, and operational data regarding aircraft operations, pricing, and marketing.
To maintain privacy, a third party will perform a “rigorous de-identification process” before the data is transferred. The sale excludes customer information, passenger profiles, loyalty program records, and personally identifiable information. Google outbid the firm Mercor, which had placed a $7.5 million bid.
The sale now faces opposition from the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA. The union has filed an objection seeking greater protections for employee data and has raised concerns regarding the “potential for reconstructing individual identities from linked datasets.”
Following these legal challenges, a US bankruptcy judge has temporarily halted the $10 million deal. The court must address concerns regarding whether the de-identification process can effectively prevent the reconstruction of personal information belonging to the airline’s former workforce. Spirit Airlines ceased all operations in May 2026 following financial difficulties and bankruptcy proceedings. A court hearing to address these objections was previously scheduled for September 9.
