Google offers ChromeOS Flex as a free operating system designed to extend the lifespan of older PCs and Macs, particularly as Microsoft approaches the end of support for Windows 10. The software is intended for hardware that may not meet the requirements for modern systems like Windows 11. To utilize the system, devices must feature a 64-bit Intel or AMD x86 processor, a minimum of 4 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of internal storage. Users must also be able to boot from USB media and access BIOS or UEFI settings. While Google maintains a list of certified models to ensure full functionality of components such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the software may work on other devices with varying degrees of success. Google has noted potential stability issues with processors manufactured before 2012 and Nvidia graphics cards produced before 2014. Google has announced that ChromeOS Flex will receive regular security updates until 2034. In a new initiative, Google and the platform Refurbed have partnered to use ChromeOS Flex to prevent functional computers from becoming electronic waste. This effort addresses the upcoming expiration of Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 on October 12, 2027. A study by Fraunhofer Austria estimates that approximately 41 million personal computers across the 27 European Union countries will lack security protections after this deadline, including an estimated 5.47 million devices in Italy. To assist users, Refurbed will offer a USB drive starting in November to test device compatibility before installation, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions and e-waste by repurposing hardware for tasks like web browsing and video calls.
