Allegations surfaced regarding a Google data center project in Muhos, Finland, involving forestry activities conducted without a required environmental impact assessment (EIA). While Tuike Finland, a subsidiary representing Google, sought to bypass the EIA process to expedite permits, satellite data indicated that logging operations continued through August despite regulatory communications suggesting an EIA was necessary. The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation raised concerns regarding potentially illegal logging at both the Muhos and Kajaani sites, though the company maintained its actions were legal and compliant with local building and forestry laws. Following these developments, the Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority (LVV) ordered the suspension of construction activities for the two planned data centers in Muhos and Kajaani. The order was issued after approximately 330 hectares of forest were cleared in Muhos and nearly 200 hectares in Kajaani before mandatory assessments were finalized. The suspension prohibits activities that significantly alter the environment, such as tree felling, excavation, and road construction, though planning and soil testing may continue. Google acknowledged the error, stating it failed to meet its own standards despite acting in good faith. Recent reports indicate that the company cleared an estimated 400,000 trees—approximately 250,000 in Muhos and 150,000 in Otanmäki—without completing the legally required assessments. Local residents have described the cleared Muhos area as a ‘muddy wasteland,’ noting that topsoil removal and runoff have polluted nearby streams and driven wolf packs into nearby villages. The controversy has sparked a national debate and a petition signed by over 93,000 people calling for stricter regulation of data centers. Antti Järvinen, Google’s director in Finland, apologized for the incident, stating the company acted based on its ‘best understanding of the legislation at the time.’
