Google DeepMind SynthID Bio protein watermarking
Overview
Google DeepMind has introduced SynthID Bio, a technology designed to embed invisible cryptographic watermarks into AI-generated protein sequences and structures. The tool aims to enhance biosecurity and scientific integrity by providing a way to trace molecular designs that may not exist in nature, potentially bypassing traditional DNA synthesis screening.
For protein sequences, the system works within the ProteinMPNN design tool by subtly adjusting amino acid probabilities to create a detectable signal. This process does not compromise the biological function, structural soundness, or folding quality of the proteins. For three-dimensional structures, the technology adjusts atomic coordinates within the AlphaFold 3 diffusion network to embed signatures into the model's weights. The project includes an open-source release to encourage scientific oversight and widespread adoption.
