Google has launched a ‘Preferred Sources’ feature designed to give users greater control over news personalization and search results. This tool allows individuals to select specific media outlets to prioritize, signaling the algorithm to weight content from those providers more heavily in Google News and general search results, such as the ‘Top Stories’ section. Users can manage these preferences through their Google Account settings under ‘Personalization and Activity’ or via the Google News app. When multiple sources are selected, the platform generates a personalized feed titled ‘From your sources’. While the feature is intended to reduce reliance on automated algorithmic curation, current availability includes Switzerland, where users must be logged into a Google account to utilize the tool. The feature has seen adoption by major media outlets, which can now provide links or buttons on their websites to allow users to signal that they value a specific brand’s reporting. While media organizations, such as the SPIEGEL Group, view the approach as a “meaningful way to reinforce the role of original journalism and media brands,” some SEO experts have expressed caution. These specialists suggest that if Google were to discontinue the feature, it could leave unnecessary code on participating websites.
