In late July 2026 Google rolled out version 7.85 of its Google Photos app for Android. The initial update refreshed the Settings UI with a Material 3 Expressive design, added a "Show shimmer" “Show shimmer” toggle that disables the visual outline around subjects, and introduced a floating‑action camera button that gives quick access to AI‑driven features such as Remix and Photo‑to‑Video. The following day, day the same version added further privacy and customization options. Users can now turn off the automatic Memories feature that creates collages, animations, and themed slideshows, and they can also disable the default glare effect that flashes around objects or faces. On 1 August 2026 the update was also released for iOS and added more display controls. Users can hide date stamps in the photo grid, and previously removed tools such as the Auto‑Trim video‑adjustment feature and a “Save as photo” button for extracting stills from videos were restored. The Material 3 Expressive redesign was applied to Backup and Preferences sections, while Notifications and Privacy retained the older look. These additions incremental changes continue to respond to user feedback seeking finer control over visual content and automated creations within the app.
