Google Play Store antitrust settlements
Overview
Google (Alphabet Inc.) has entered into significant legal settlements regarding allegations of market dominance and excessive commission fees within its Play Store ecosystem.
In the United States, a federal court approved a $700 million settlement to resolve a multi-state antitrust lawsuit. The agreement aims to provide restitution to consumers for purchases made between August 2016 and September 2023. It also mandates changes to business practices, including allowing developers to use alternative payment systems and permitting Android users to download applications from sources other than the Play Store for at least seven years.
Concurrently, in the United Kingdom, Alphabet Inc. agreed to a £260 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit. This settlement, described as the largest under the UK’s 2015 class action regime for competition claims, allocates £160 million to UK-based app developers who sold digital content via the Play Store between August 2018 and July 2026, with the remainder covering litigation costs. Google has not admitted to legal liability or wrongdoing in the UK case.
