Grab has announced plans to acquire a controlling stake in Singapore-based buy now, pay later (BNPL) provider Atome Financial. The transaction involves an initial US$1.49 billion to US$1.5 billion investment for a 60 per cent stake, with an agreement to acquire the remaining 40 per cent in approximately two years based on performance-linked metrics such as revenue and EBITDA. The total valuation for Atome is expected to range between US$2 billion and US$4.5 billion. The acquisition is intended to integrate Atome’s digital lending and BNPL services with Grab’s existing financial services ecosystem across Southeast Asia, including Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand. Grab aims to leverage its digital banks to lower funding costs and utilize AI-driven underwriting to expand financial access to unbanked and underbanked populations. Industry analysts note that the move comes as standalone BNPL platforms face challenges from high customer acquisition costs and tightening regional regulations, such as interest rate caps in Indonesia. Following the deal, Grab has raised its 2028 financial targets, projecting an adjusted EBITDA of US$1.7 billion and a combined financial services segment EBITDA of US$500 million by 2028. Following a significant drop in stock price that coincided with the announcement of the Atome Financial acquisition, Grab executives Anthony Tan and Alexander Hungate invested over $30 million of their personal capital into company shares. CEO Anthony Tan purchased approximately $29.88 million in Class A ordinary shares, while COO Alexander Hungate invested roughly $867,000. This leadership investment occurred alongside the authorization of a $900 million share buyback program over the next 12 months, plus an additional $750 million in buybacks authorized with recent financial guidance updates. Despite investor concerns regarding the strategic pivot, Grab reported strong Q2 2026 results, including a 22% year-over-year revenue increase to $997 million and a 54% growth in adjusted EBITDA.
