Severe flash flooding in Grand Canyon National Park, triggered by heavy rainfall on the Kaibab Plateau, has resulted in at least two confirmed deaths and left one person unaccounted for. One victim, identified as 46-year-old John Giusti from Texas, was recovered near Crystal Rapids. Search and recovery operations have progressed since the initial impact. While early reports suggested as many as 15 to 20 people were missing, officials stated on Monday that most individuals have been located, leaving only one person unaccounted for. Emergency responders successfully evacuated approximately 82 people from the affected areas, many of whom were airlifted from the canyon floor. Search teams continue to utilize specialized equipment and cadaver dogs to locate the remaining missing individual. Infrastructure damage remains extensive. Approximately 40 percent of the 12.5-mile Transcanyon Waterline was destroyed, leading to limited water reserves and emergency water restrictions for residents and visitors. Additionally, nearly all footbridges spanning Bright Angel Creek have been destroyed, and the creek bed has been widened by the force of the water. Consequently, overnight accommodations at park lodges have been suspended, and several areas, including the North Kaibab Trail, Bright Angel Campground, and Phantom Ranch, remain closed until further notice. Rafting on the Colorado River also remains suspended due to the danger of floating debris. Ongoing monsoonal storms and heavy rainfall continue to complicate rescue efforts and pose risks of additional debris flows and rockfalls. The disruption to tourism and lodging services is expected to have a substantial economic impact on the region.
