Grayscale Research has identified a growing intersection between artificial intelligence and the cryptocurrency sector, focusing on both privacy concerns and infrastructure development. Initial analysis suggests that the rise of AI increases the urgency for cryptocurrency privacy. Researchers argue that AI models can efficiently analyze public blockchain data and cross-reference transaction patterns with external data to deanonymize users. This development is characterized as a “third wave” of financial privacy concerns, potentially making technologies like Zcash and its use of zero-knowledge proofs more critical for shielded transactions. Subsequent research from the firm highlights specific projects building AI-related blockchain infrastructure. These include Pearl, which Pearl focuses on AI computing and GPU utilization; DATA Network, which Network manages human-contributed training materials; and USD. AI (CHIP), which (CHIP) directs blockchain capital toward loans secured by computing hardware. Recent updates provide further detail on these projects. Pearl, which enables GPUs to perform AI tasks while securing a proof-of-work blockchain, reportedly saw a 580% price increase over a three-month period ending October 22. DATA Network, which provides training materials like photos and voice recordings to AI laboratories, received a $30 million investment from the Sui Foundation. While its Trace registry has recorded over 250 million contributions, specific details on contributor compensation and license revenue distribution remain undisclosed. Grayscale noted that the long-term relevance of these projects will depend on “widespread adoption and competitive economics.”
