Graz KPÖ-Green coalition government formation

Overview

Following municipal elections on June 28, the KPÖ emerged as the largest party in Graz with 35.7 percent of the vote, followed by the ÖVP and the Greens. The KPÖ and Green Party formed a coalition holding 25 of the 48 city council seats, a partnership that continues from 2021. This coalition resulted in the expected re-election of Elke Kahr as Mayor.

The city senate will follow a proportional distribution, with the KPÖ holding three seats, the ÖVP two, the Greens one, and the FPÖ one.

To address a debt load of two billion euros, the new administration announced significant austerity measures. The coalition aims to save 115 million euros in the operating budget by 2031 and plans to reduce scheduled investments from 300 million to 150 million euros. Additionally, the economic and tourism portfolios are set to shift from the ÖVP to the FPÖ.
