A trainee diver was injured during a great white shark attack off the coast of Percé, Quebec. The incident occurred during a diving session involving the firm Plongée Percé near the eastern tip of the Gaspé Peninsula. Details indicate the attack took place during a three-minute safety stop approximately five metres below the surface. An instructor reported seeing the shark in contact with the diver before it swam away. The Jean-François Vézina, vice-chair of Plongée Percé’s board of directors, confirmed the victim sustained multiple lacerations to the upper body and body. The diver was able to remove his own equipment and receive first aid on a company boat before being transported to a hospital. While the victim is reported to be in stable condition and not in immediate danger, Plongée Percé has suspended all diving activities for the remainder of the season. Local officials noted that while shark sightings have increased in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, this marks the first recorded encounter of its kind in Percé.
