Greco-Persian Wars land and sea battles

During the Greco-Persian Wars in 480 BCE, Greek forces attempted to halt a massive Persian invasion led by King Xerxes I through a dual land and sea defense. At the land pass of Thermopylae, a limited Greek force including King Leonidas and his Spartan hoplites utilized phalanx formations to block Persian advances for two days until a mountain path was revealed to the invaders.

Simultaneously, the Greek fleet engaged Persian forces at the Battle of Artemisium in northeastern Euboea. Led by Themistocles, the Greek navy utilized 271 triremes to contest a much larger Persian fleet. The naval defense was strategically tied to the land defense at Thermopylae; while the land position was eventually bypassed, the naval engagement resulted in a strategic Greek victory that maintained control of the area.

Following the destruction of Athens, the conflict reached a turning point in August 479 BCE at the Battle of Plataea. This decisive Greek victory effectively ended the Persian threat to the Greek mainland. Before the battle, the Persian commander Mardonius attempted to secure peace through Alexander I of Macedon, offering to rebuild Athens and grant the Athenians leadership over Greece in exchange for an alliance.

Despite these offers, Athenian leader Aristides rejected both the Persian diplomatic overtures and pressure from Spartan ambassadors. He maintained that the Athenians would continue to fight for their freedom, refusing to betray their homeland for wealth or political concessions.
