Greek military assets have been increasingly active in Cyprus, beginning with test flights of F-16 Viper fighter jets over Nicosia in late September. These flights served as preparations for the 66th anniversary of Cyprus's independence, an event also marked by an increased presence from Egypt, reflecting strengthening regional ties. Following these celebrations, Greek F-16 jets deployed to the Andreas Papandreou Air Base in Paphos to participate in the ‘IRIS 2026’ military exercise. Organized by the Cyprus National Guard, the exercise involves live-fire drills at the Kalo Chorio firing range to test operational readiness and coordination through combat simulations. The IRIS-2026 exercises concluded with large-scale, multi-branch operations at the Kalo Chorio Firing Range, involving infantry, armored, and special forces units, alongside drone usage. Greek F-16 fighter jets supported the drills through test flights and flyovers designed to facilitate ground and air coordination. Scenarios tested the ability to repel enemy incursions, organize counter-attacks, and reclaim territory. Upon the conclusion of the drills, Cypriot Defense Minister Vassilis Palmas highlighted the necessity of maintaining readiness and enhancing deterrent capabilities, citing the occupation of parts of the island and ongoing regional geopolitical volatility. He further noted that the exercise serves to evaluate discipline and effectiveness while utilizing the European SAFE program to modernize defense equipment and support the domestic defense industry.
