In August 2026, migration activity remained high across the Mediterranean. In mid-August, the Greek Coast Guard and Frontex conducted several operations off the southern coast of Crete and Gavdos, rescuing 327 migrants over a two-day period. Survivors reported their vessels originated from the region near the Libyan port of Tobruk. According to the UNHCR, more than 10,000 migrants had arrived on Crete since the start of the year through early August. Concurrently, the Turkish Coast Guard intercepted and rescued 52 irregular migrants near İzmir following a surveillance detection and a distress call involving an engine failure. On August 23, the Turkish Coast Guard also rescued 14 irregular migrants, including two children, from a life raft near Marmaris; reports indicated the group had been pushed back into Turkish waters by Greek authorities. By late August, Greece continued managing arrivals through search and rescue and strategic transfers. Following the rescue of approximately 181 migrants from waters south of Crete, the Ministry of Migration and Asylum began transferring hundreds of people to North Aegean islands like Samos and Lesvos. Migration Minister Thanos Pleuris stated that Crete has become a primary front for migration pressures, noting approximately 12,000 arrivals on the island. Law enforcement also targeted smuggling operations. On August 26, multiple operations south of Crete, including assistance from a Malta-flagged tanker and a Denmark-flagged cargo vessel, recovered over 200 migrants. Following these rescues, Greek authorities arrested several suspects. In one instance, three individuals aged 19 to 26 were identified by passengers after the rescue of 150 migrants; passengers reported paying between 8,000 and 15,000 Libyan dinars per person. Near Ierapetra, two 17-year-old nationals were also arrested following the rescue of 108 migrants. On August 29, the Turkish Coast Guard conducted two separate operations near İzmir, rescuing 67 irregular migrants.
