In August 2026, migration activity remained high across the Mediterranean. In mid-August, the Greek Coast Guard and Frontex conducted several operations off the southern coast of Crete and Gavdos, rescuing 327 migrants over a two-day period. Survivors reported their vessels originated from the region near the Libyan port of Tobruk. According to the UNHCR, more than 10,000 migrants had arrived on Crete since the start of the year through early August. Concurrently, the Turkish Coast Guard intercepted and rescued 52 irregular migrants near İzmir following a surveillance detection and a distress call involving an engine failure. On August 23, the Turkish Coast Guard also rescued 14 irregular migrants, including two children, from a life raft near Marmaris; reports indicated the group had been pushed back into Turkish waters by Greek authorities. By late August, the Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum initiated temporary transfers of migrants from Crete to North Aegean islands like Samos and Lesvos to facilitate screening, stating these movements were conducted in an ‘absolutely proportional manner’. During this period, multiple maritime operations off Crete’s southern coast, including near Ierapetra, rescued over 200 migrants. Law enforcement also targeted smuggling; Greek authorities arrested several individuals, including minors, identified by passengers as smugglers who had been paid to transport people from Tobruk. ~~In late August, the Turkish Coast Guard rescued 67 migrants near Izmir in two separate operations.~~ By early September, Turkish authorities reported a decline in irregular migration numbers in the Aegean compared to 2025. ~~However,~~ In mid-September, migration pressure on Crete intensified in October. Between October 10 and 14, approximately 1,000 migrants arriving from Libya reached Crete via more than 17 vessels. Local authorities in Ierapetra reported struggles with accommodation, continued with ~~some~~ multiple rescues. On September 15, over 100 migrants ~~sheltering~~ were rescued in ~~vehicles.
