Greece has expanded its public health efforts to address cancer through strategic planning and the launch of a nationwide free skin cancer screening program. The Ministry of Health is developing a National Cancer Action Plan (ESDK) to create a unified roadmap for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and palliative care. This strategy involves a working group of state officials, medical professionals, and patient advocacy groups to establish measurable goals. Building on previous efforts, a 3.7 million euro pilot program funded by ESPA resources is being implemented by the Andreas Syggros Hospital of Athens and the Hippokrateio General Regional Hospital of Thessaloniki. This initiative targets high-risk groups in remote and underserved regions—such as farmers, fishermen, and livestock breeders—using teledermatology, specialized dermatoscopes, and artificial intelligence to prioritize melanoma and skin cancer cases. Deputy Health Minister Eirini Agapidakis has announced the rollout of the ‘Prolamvano’ program, which expands these free skin cancer screenings nationwide. The program continues to utilize technology and artificial intelligence to ensure early detection, specifically emphasizing workers in the primary sector frequently exposed to solar radiation. To support these efforts, the Ministry is deploying Mobile Health Teams (KOMY) across the country. These teams utilize telemedicine and advanced technology to perform specialized examinations in remote areas, including abdominal and thyroid ultrasounds, spirometry, electrocardiograms, and blood tests, overseen by specialists from major hospitals. Additionally, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis has reported significant infrastructure improvements within the National Health System ~~(ESY).
