Greece energy market and policy developments

Greece is actively engaging with European energy markets and policy frameworks, focusing on both future hydrogen infrastructure and current natural gas security.

Regarding the transition to renewable energy, Greece is positioned to participate in a European hydrogen market requiring an estimated 192 billion euros in investment. While the ENTSOG Ten-Year Network Development Plan 2026 identifies 10 hydrogen projects in Greece, the market remains in an immature phase with limited final investment decisions. Domestic efforts include infrastructure plans for pipelines and storage, alongside specific projects like Motor Oil’s electrolysis unit in Corinth.

In the natural gas sector, Greece has submitted proposals to the European Commission’s energy Task Force to address price volatility and supply security. Represented by Deputy Minister Nikos Tsafos, the Greek delegation is advocating for a reassessment of the current 90% gas storage filling mandate. Athens argues that this target may act as a “price trap” by fueling artificial demand, suggesting that increased LNG infrastructure and decreased European gas consumption provide sufficient systemic flexibility.
