The Greek higher‑education higher-education overhaul progressed in late July 2026. After earlier reports of a nearly 10 000‑seat shortfall for the 2026 university entrance exams through mid-2026 with significant structural and the approval infrastructural investments. A key component of the reform is a €48.5 million €48,471,560 modernisation package that created dedicated plan approved by Deputy Minister Nikos Papathanasi. Funded by the European Social Fund’s Human Capital and Social Cohesion 2021–2027 programme, this initiative covers 25 universities and includes 51 specific actions. These actions establish specialized units for Student Support, Quality Assurance, Strategic Planning, Digital Governance units Governance, and a Teaching‑and‑Learning Teaching-and-Learning Support Centre at all public universities, Deputy Minister for National Economy to improve graduate employability and Finance Nikos Papathanasi added a further €12.07 million administrative efficiency. To bolster academic staffing, an additional €12,070,846.11 was allocated under the same ESFA Human Capital and Social Cohesion 2021‑2027 programme. Ten measures were approved programme to fund support doctoral holders with through autonomous teaching assignments at assignments. This measure targets ten initial institutions—including Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Peloponnese, University of Piraeus, Agricultural University of Athens, Thessaloniki and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, International Hellenic University, University of Ioannina, University of West Attica, Higher School of Pedagogical and Technological Education and Higher School Athens—with further incorporation of Fine Arts for the 2026‑27 academic year.
