Greece and Italy have signed an implementing agreement in Rome to finalize the €460 million procurement of two Bergamini-class FREMM frigates for the Hellenic Navy. The agreement establishes the legal, financial, and technical terms for the transfer of the ITS Carlo Bergamini (F-590) and the ITS Virginio Fasan ~~(F-591).~~ (F-591), which are currently in service with the Italian Navy. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2028, with the second expected in the first half of 2029. To ensure the ships meet Greek operational requirements, the vessels will undergo upgrades and ~~adaptations, with~~ adaptations. Fincantieri will play a central role in the transfer and ongoing support, while Greek shipyards are expected to participate in maintenance and the installation of new systems to facilitate technology transfer. This procurement is part of a broader strategy to modernize the Hellenic Navy and enhance its deterrent capabilities in the Mediterranean. The deal includes an option for the potential acquisition of two additional FREMM units in the future. Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias and Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto noted that the agreement fosters strategic cooperation and strengthens the domestic defense industry.
