Greece is pursuing several initiatives to enhance technological innovation and workforce capabilities. Development Minister Takis Theodorakakos has emphasized the importance of domestic knowledge production, specifically noting the development of Greek large language models such as Meltemi and Krikri. During the 35th anniversary of the Language Processing Institute of the Athena Research Center, the Minister stated that Greece must move beyond merely importing foreign technologies to becoming a leading producer of its own innovations. A collaborative project involving the Greek government, Athena Research Center, ILP, and ElevenLabs is also working to create a digital library of Greek dialects to preserve linguistic heritage. This project is set to begin with the Cretan dialect, with subsequent plans to include Pontic, Tsakonian, and other regional dialects. To support these technological goals, the Ministry of Development has completed a program exceeding 300 million euros aimed at upgrading research infrastructure across the country. To support the digital transition, there are ongoing discussions regarding the upgrading of Vocational Lyceums to better integrate technical and professional skills. Complementing these efforts, the Next Skills Academy, a nationwide initiative by ADMIE and Wise Greece, has launched a professional development program. This program provides free training in digital and green skills, including Artificial Intelligence and environmental management, to bridge the gap between current workforce capabilities and modern market demands.
