Greek coffee market trends and industry challenges

Overview

The Greek coffee market is experiencing a shift in consumer behavior, moving from traditional Greek coffee toward espresso, capsules, and beans as people seek to replicate cafe experiences at home. Despite rising costs of living, coffee retail sales showed significant growth, reaching approximately 501.4 million euros in 2025.

Industry representatives, including Anastasios Giagkoglou, President of the Hellenic Coffee Association, have noted that the sector is navigating several pressures. These include volatile raw material prices, increased transportation costs, rising energy and wage expenses, and the impact of the climate crisis on global crops.

A central point of industry advocacy is the Special Consumption Tax (SCT) implemented in 2017. The Hellenic Coffee Association is calling for the tax to be reduced or abolished, arguing that it contributes to inflationary pressures and encourages illegal trade without providing benefits to the value chain.
